There are two main ways to dehumanize someone: to dismiss them, and to idealize them. Sometimes the things that feel the best also feel the worst. Being worshipped and desired is thrilling. Being objectified, dehumanized, and generally used for the purposes of others can hurt. The dynamic causes a twisted, ambivalent, confusing sort of pain.
